Refettorio Gastromotiva Welcomes Visit from the Kofi Annan Foundation

Members of the Foundation’s Food Security Commission participated in the Social Gastronomic Dinner volunteer program, serving individuals in vulnerable situations.

In alignment with the G20 agenda, Refettorio Gastromotiva welcomed a visit from the Food Security Commission of the Kofi Annan Foundation, whose namesake was the former Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), on July 23. The Commission was represented by Foundation Commissioner and co-founder of Agrosmart, Mariana Vasconcelos; David Nabarro, former Co-Lead of the UN Global Crisis Response Group, strategic director of the 4SD Foundation, and WHO Special Envoy for COVID-19; and Ayooshee Dookhee, project manager of the Foundation’s commission.

The visit aimed to showcase the frontline work of Gastromotiva to the Kofi Annan Foundation’s Food Security Commission. This includes the Social Gastronomic Dinners at the Refettorio, which serve people in vulnerable situations with meals prepared using a zero-waste approach, and educational projects focused on personal development and inclusive income generation.

The partnership between Gastromotiva and Kofi Annan, who passed away in 2018, has deep roots. The idea for the organization was conceived after its founders, David Hertz and Urideia Andrade, met Annan in 2005 in New York.

“I had the pleasure of meeting Kofi Annan in 2005. It was after meeting and talking with him that Urideia and I conceived the idea of Gastromotiva. We brought it to life the following year in the Jaguaré Favela in São Paulo. Today, 19 years later, having the honor of hosting members of his foundation in our home proves that we are on the right path,” celebrated David Hertz, founder and president of Gastromotiva.

The commission members had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the work at Refettorio Gastromotiva by participating in the Social Gastronomic Dinner volunteer program. They served the beneficiaries, gaining direct insight into their stories and challenges.
